15. Toraja south stone burial chamber

We are heading off on scooters again.

We followed Daud to the Buffalo market.  The Toraja use so many for their funerals they have to import them from other islands. Elsewhere they are not so expensive as they are just used in the field.

They stay here until the funerals with there handlers

Getting sprayed with water to keep cool

The pigs are stalled on round rolly bamboo logs the only one we saw standing moved very tentatively

Moving on to the central market Betel nut and palm wine by the gallon

Daud paid most attention to the handmade  knives like we saw the slaughter men had at the funeral yesterday

We rode through the countryside passing  granite boulders with burial chambers carved into them. Multiple family members. In one tomb. And multiple families

..months to make new burial.chamber.

. All of the persons material possessions were left there with the bodies, bad luck to keep them at home.

if not room inside bags outside

many bodies inside. Bottles of water are left outside

These were used to carry the coffins to the burial chambers

It’s a mystery tour we just follow Daud . We stopped at a torajan house. The lovely  woman showed us things from her garden  it’s all another Indonesian language lesson for me

Pangi tree seed skin  inner dried become  black . Pamerrasan  a local stew flavoured with this.

And walked through a  garden lots of  chilli and cassava  then we arrived at an old  baby grave tree. This doesn’t happen any more but was how very small babies,  before they have teeth and are pure or  sacred.

were entombed

They were  out of the house in an hour or two after their death and quickly entombed… The sap of the tree is white like mik  so they will continue to be fed. They were encapsulated standing up so they can continue growing with the tree. And their spirit can rise to the top of the tree.

Older babies were buried .

Then we went to see a cave with old caskets and effigies of the person. The wood on these caskets is thick and wide made of jackfruit wood  and carved . These may be ancient ancestors  but  they still need the cigarettes that visitors leave .

Behind us modern crypt concrete with Christian paintings

Around the round about. Literally go around the roundabout. Which way up to your discretion
